Ashwini Tanisha Tug of War with Gayatri Treesa to Paris 2024

World # 28 Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto trail behind India's No.1 Women's Doubles pair Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly. After the Silver medal from the BWF Super 300 Syed Modi International, Tanisha Ashwini edges closer to India's top pair and dims their chance to the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics next year.

They beat India's top pair in the pre-quarterfinals round in the Syed Modi international which allowed both pairs to live in and close contest to play the Summer Olympics. The rank and points difference between the pairs after Syed Modi International is 3 ranks and approx. 2000 respectively now. While Gayatri Treesa is not playing in the BWF Super 100 Guwahati Open, No.2 seeded Ashwini Tanisha storms into the semi-finals which guarantees a minimum of 3850 points in additional. The victory in the quarter-finals of the Guwahati Open will put Ashwini Tanisha in front of Gayatri Treesa in the race to Paris 2024 qualification ranking.

Qualification is entirely through the ranking list of the BWF Race to Paris Summer Olympics, not by the BWF world or tour rankings. The ranking is based on the tournaments happening during the qualification window period from 1 May 2023 to 28 April 2024 for men's singles & doubles, women's singles & doubles, and mixed doubles events. It is interesting to evidence these pairs contest in the upcoming Super 100 Odisha Open next week and during the window period till 28th April 2024.

Singles qualification:

There are 38 initial quota places for the men's singles. Nations with multiple players in the top 16 of the ranking list could earn 2 quota places; all others are limited to 1. Players are taken from the BWF Race to Paris Olympic Qualification ranking list in order, respecting the national limits, until the places are filled. Each continent is guaranteed one spot, either through the invitational spots or by replacing the lowest-ranked player if necessary. The host nation spot may be used by France or unused.

Additional places beyond 38 are added where players qualified as per Olympic norms, including invited Refugee Team, and the total of qualified players is thus 42.

Doubles qualification:

Nations with at least two qualification pairs in the top 8 can send a maximum of 2 pairs (4 players); all other nations are limited to a single pair. Pairs are taken from the BWF Race to Paris Olympic Qualification ranking list in order, respecting those national limits, until 16 pairs are selected. However, each continent is guaranteed to have at least one pair with the lowest-ranking pairs displaced if necessary to make room for a continental guarantee.

While half of the selection period is over by Nov 2023, the qualification positions and chances of Indian players are discussed in comparison with other countries. After the upcoming Syed Modi Super 300, only 4 months are remaining for the players whose chances are hanging.

Indian probable contingent for Summer Olympics Paris 2024 by 27th Nov 2023 is listed.
