.India’s next generation of badminton talent is making its presence felt at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships 2026 in Chengdu, China, with four Indian entries reaching the semifinals across the U17 and U15 events. The strongest showing has come in U17 women’s singles, where second seed Tanvi Patri and sixth seed Shaina Manimuthu have both advanced to the last four, while Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma have carried India’s challenge into the U15 men’s doubles semifinals. The championships are being held at the Wenjiang Gymnasium from September 8 to 13, with all five disciplines contested in both U17 and U15 categories.

Tanvi Patri Leads India’s U17 Women’s Singles Charge

Tanvi Patri, seeded No.2, remains firmly in contention for the U17 women’s singles title. Her semifinal is against China's Gui Ying Yu, setting up another major test for the Indian youngster as she looks to convert her strong tournament run into a place in the final.

Patri arrived in Chengdu with considerable expectations. The Badminton Association of India had identified her as one of India's leading young women's singles players, with Patri ranked No.2 in the BAI U-19 girls' singles rankings at the time of selection and having won the women's singles title at the All India Junior Ranking tournament in Bengaluru earlier this year.

A place in the Asian U17 final would be another important milestone in her development.

Shaina Manimuthu Continues Her Rise

Alongside Patri, sixth seed Shaina Manimuthu has also reached the U17 women's singles semifinals. Her semifinal opponent is Japan's Anon Okimoto.

Shaina's presence in the last four is particularly significant given her recent record at this level. She was the reigning girls' singles U15 champion at the Badminton Asia U17 & U15 Junior Championships 2025, according to the BAI selection documentation. That makes her Chengdu campaign an important opportunity to make the transition from an outstanding U15 performer to a serious contender in the U17 age group.

Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma Keep India Alive in U15 Men’s Doubles

India's third semifinal opportunity comes in U15 men's doubles, where Aaditya Singh Negi and Tanmay Verma have reached the last four.

The Indian pair face China's Han Hong Dong and Jia Lun Zhang in the semifinal. The draw also places another Chinese/Korean combination on the opposite side, meaning a win would put the Indian youngsters into the championship match.

For a developing doubles pair, reaching the semifinals of a continental championship is already a valuable achievement. But the opportunity is now much bigger: one victory separates Aaditya and Tanmay from an Asian junior final.

A Strong Sign for India’s Junior Pipeline

These results are significant beyond the medals that may eventually come from Chengdu. The Badminton Asia Junior Championships are one of the most important continental platforms for identifying the players who could become India's future senior international stars.

The BAI selection process itself underlined the importance of the event, with the federation using the All India Sub Junior Ranking tournament as the selection event for the Indian U15 and U17 teams.
