Rare Pathway for Asian Games | National Badminton Senior Ranking, Haryana, April 2023

Indian Olympic Association (IOA) informed the various sports associations to submit the player names for the Asian Games 2023 on or before 15th May 2023. In continuation and reference to the minutes of the BAI senior selection committee meeting dated 05/01/2023, the selection trials for the players will be called on the basis of their performances in the All India Senior Ranking Tournament (National Senior Ranking, Haryana, April 2023) along with the players in the Top-50 BWF ranking. The date and venue of the Selection Trials will be announced after Haryana Tournament and may be expected later through a separate circular.



The norms set by the BAI Selection Committee which constitutes Mr. Partho Ganguly - Ex-International Player, Mr. Pullela Gopichand - Chief National Coach, Ex-International Player, Ms. Manjusha Kanwar - Ex-International Player, Ms. Jwala Gutta - Ex-International Player, Mr. Dwi Kristiawan - Foreign Coach, and Mr. Sanjay Mishra, General Secretary, BAI are as follows.


Direct Selection:

-Top 20 BWF ranking players/pairs will be selected directly

-Performance of the Indian players against the best players in the world in the last three months.

-Performance of players in the Senior National Badminton Championships ’23


A total of 10 Men's and 10 Women's players will be selected to represent 7 medal badminton events (Men's singles, Women's Singles, Men's doubles, Women's doubles, Mixed Doubles, Men's Team, and Women's Team). 4 Singles, 4 Doubles, and 2 Mixed doubles players of Men and Women each will be part of the squad. After the direct selection, the remaining slots will be selected from the trials expected to be scheduled during the 2nd or 3rd week of May '23.


Selection through Trails:

Eligibility criteria to participate in the trials for identifying remaining slots after selection trials are given.

- All the semi-finalists in the Men’s & Women’s singles events and finalists in the paired events of the All India Senior Ranking Tournament, Haryana, April 2023.

- Top 50 BWF Ranking as of the last day of the BAI Tournament who are outside the pool of the directly selected players mentioned in the above criteria.

WD: Treesa Jolly & Gayatri Gopichand, No.17

XD: Nil


Direct selection cut-off Top-15 has increased to Top-20 for whom the Asian games are important to get qualify for Paris Summer Olympics 2024. Lakshya Sen and Treesa & Gayatri pair may be benefitted from this decision.


The remaining 13 players will be selected directly based on the National Championship in Pune 2023 and the players' recent three months' international performance against the world's best players.

Probable players' based on their international performance during the last three months

This criterion is critical for several players to find their berth in the squad. If they miss, they will participate in the selection trial to get the berth.

The players not selected from the above criteria would require to participate in the selection trials with the semifinalists and finalists of singles and doubles respectively from the National Ranking Tournament, Haryana, in April 2023.


It is rare, but the pathway for the emerging talents to find their place in the national squad for Asian Games 2023, Hangzhou 2022, China from 23 Sept 2023 to Sun, 8 Oct 2023.
