Sankar Muthusamy and Rakshitha Sree are BAI Core Development Group Players

It was decided by the BAI senior selection committee to add 10 to 12 junior players to the TOPS core group after the junior player selection trial tournament. This group is named "Core Development Group". The junior selection committee was constituted to select players for the Core Development Group and World Junior Championship 2022.

Eligibility Criteria for Junior Selection Trial Tournament 2022


The committee proposed the criteria based on which eligible players would be invited to participate in the junior selection trial, held at Raipur, in Aug 2022. BAI Circular dated 4th July 2022.


  • Under 19 Players who are in the top 20 of the World BWF Junior Ranking in all the categories.


  • Top 4 players of singles and top 2 pairs of doubles events of the following tournaments

    • All India Junior Ranking Tournament U19, Bengaluru, April 2022

    • All India Junior Ranking Tournament U19, Panchkula, July 2022

    • All India Junior Ranking Tournament U19, Goa, July 2022


  • Top 4 players of singles and top 2 pairs of doubles of the National Junior ranking after the above three tournaments.


  • Top 2 in Singles and Winning pair of U17 events of the following tournaments

    • All India Sub Junior Ranking Tournament, Panchkula January 2022

    • All India Sub Junior Ranking Tournament, Goa July 2022


After the selection trial held at Raipur in August 2022, the selection committee has announced the list of selected players representing India in the Word Junior Championship 2022 and the Core Development Group players who will get the financial support for their training and 02 – 04 international tournament participation.

These 10 players selected from the junior selection trials will be joining with the 42 senior players selected for TOPS Core Group from the senior selection trial, and will be supported by BAI / SAI to gain international ranks.

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) has evolved and is executing the selection procedures in a transparent and inclusive way. The selection committees are represented by the senior Indian coaches, Former Indian coaches, Former International players, Foreign coaches, and BAI office bearers.


The committee ensures the sustained development of players, fair distribution of the finance to the different performance levels, consistent growth in the world ranking of Indian players, inclusiveness of experience, form, skill & consistency in performance, and identifying the young skills in the early stage.

This article discusses the observations and outcomes of the recently conducted Senior and Junior Selection Trails by Badminton India. The reformation introduced this year in the selection methods gives the players confidence to focus on their training and tournaments.

Now, this new selection method executed by BAI for TOPS Core Group players provides the clarity of participating in the selection trials to ensure the sustained development, than making additional efforts to participate in the international tournaments to gain world ranks.

 

 


1) Selection Committee of the Badminton Association of India in due consultation with the concerned department of the Sports Authority of India has prepared Core Group Players including Elite players. For participation in higher grade International Tournaments, entries of Senior Players are sent from the Core Group as per their BWF Ranking. Core Group Players are identified from selection trial tournaments.


2)Apart from the above, for a few International Tournaments, players are selected from National Senior Ranking Tournaments. These Selection Tournaments are declared in advance and published on the BAI official website.


3) For Team Championship such as Asian Badminton Championship, Thomas & Uber Cup, the selection committee selects top players as per their performance and BWF Ranking.


4) For Junior & Sub – Jr. International Tournaments, teams are selected, at present, on the basis of the declaration of selection tournaments in advance, which are circulated and published on the BAI website well in advance.



Eligibility Criteria for Senior Selection Trial Tournament 2022


This article discusses the selection procedure implemented by the senior and junior selection committees to select the players for the major international tournaments and Core Group Players.


Recent Senior Selection Committee Constitution for Common Wealth Games 2022, Thomas Uber Cup 2022, Asian Games 2022, and Core Group Players for 2024 Olympics from the senior selection trial conducted in New Delhi from 15th to 20th April 2022.

The committee proposed the criteria based on which eligible players who would be invited to participate in the selection trial. BAI Circular dated 1st Apr 2022. The criterias are,


  • Top 16 singles players and 8 doubles pairs based on the latest two national ranking tournaments (Chennai and Hyderabad, Dec 2021).

  • BWF Ranking players between WR#16 to WR#50 as per the BWF ranking published on 29th March 2022.

  • Present Core Group Players selected on 30th Nov 2019.

 
 

Important observations from these criteria are,


Players above BWF WR#16 are exempted from participating in the selection trial and they are selected for Core Group players of this year and for Olympic 2024 by default.


In-form players in the national circuit and experienced international players with BWF rank are treated equally and required to compete in the selection trial to ensure their core group representation.


Existing Core Group players who missed entering the BWF World Rank 1- 15, are required to participate in the selection trial to reinsure their berth in the core group.


Based on the specified criteria for the selection trial, 26 Men Singles, 20 Women Singles, 14 Men’s Doubles pairs, 11 mixed doubles pairs, and 13 Men’s Doubles Pairs were invited to participate in the selection trial in New Delhi.


From the selection trial, a Core Group of 42 players for the year 2022 has been announced.

Selected core group players will get assistance from BAI and SAI for training and competition participation. The selected players have been distributed into four groups.



TOPS Core Group

Of the selected players from the selection trial, the players with up to BWF rank #25 are in TOPS core group. They will be supported sufficiently by BAI and SAI to maintain their World Rank. If a player missed maintain the rank in BWF world rank top 25, will be moved down to Group A subsequently.

Group A

In addition to the TOPS core group players, Winners and Runners of all the events from the selection trial forms group A. These players will be assisted financially for their training, and 12 to 14 international tournament participation.

Group B

Group B players were selected from the selection trial positions 3,4,& 5 in singles events, and 3 & 4 in doubles events, and 3 in the mixed doubles events. These players will be assisted financially for their training, and 08 to 10 international tournament participation.

Group C

Group C players were selected from, the selection trial positions 6,7,& 8 in singles events and 5 & 6 in Doubles events, and 4 in the mixed doubles events. These players will be assisted financially for their training, and 06 to 08 international tournament participation.


If a player is not holding the BWF Rank (upcoming player in group C), the player will be given financial assistance to participate in 4 international tournaments to gain BWF Rank by participating in the qualification rounds. Unless the financial assistance will be given to the only players who get the main draw entry.


And, it was decided by the senior selection committee to add 10 to 12 junior players to this group after the junior player selection trial tournament.
